The shady government launched program of SIS-C

“At SIS-C slaughterhouses, visibly diseased animals – cattle infected with measles and tapeworms, covered with abscesses – were being slaughtered. Poorly trained company inspectors were allowing shipment of beef contaminated with fecal material, hair, insects, metal shavings, urine, and vomit.”(Schlosser, Eric. “What’s In the Meat.” Fast Food Nation. Pg 207. Harper Perennial. 2005. Print. Nov 11, 2010)

The thing that interested me was the SIS-C program. It stands for the Streamlined Inspection System for Cattle. It was launched by USDA under Reagan administration. It was funny how it was started. The federal government created this plan to limit the government inspectors in the slaughterhouses to inspect meat. It was created by government to have less federal inspectors inspecting the meat every American consumes. This program led to many problems. The slaughterhouses that took part in this program were mostly the one who had E-coli contamination in their meat. All the government asked of these slaughterhouses was to do their own inspection, and have themselves follow food safety guidelines. This is totally something that was not right thing to do. The slaughterhouses already knew whenever a USDA investigator would be coming to their plant. They would just clean up after themselves, fake logs of inspections, and just ship of contaminated meat without even realizing or checking it is contaminated or not. These plants had visible problems yet the safety of our meat relied on company hired employees that were clumsy enough to let E-coli contaminated meat get to our tables.

  1. I used the same quote in my blog! You are right in saying that the slaughter houses should not inspect their own meat, because it is very easy for them to lie and falsify records. On the other hand I feel that better precautionary measures should be taken to make sure that the contaminated meat not make it into the food supply.

  2. Dear Sumaiya,
I liked how you related the quote to something besides the fact that the food produced from the companies is contaminated, dirty and disgusting. Instead of those obvious details, you linked it to what the Streamlined Inspection System for Cattle was and how it wasn't good because of the small amount of inspectors it consisted of. This is a great topic that you can research and find a lot of information for.

  3. Yea this goes back to the presentation that we did in class about faking the logs, and the plants just cleaning after themselves before an inspector comes. This whole operation is TOTALLY ineffective. Contaminated meats are still reaching the food tables and killing hundreds of people. This just goes to show that these large corporations lost their sense of sensitivity and forget that the foods that they actually make are going to be eaten. MONEY is the root of all EVIL!

  4. I find it funny how easy it is for a big and important industry to lie to the government, it really shows how much they care about the nation. Who in the right mind would just let something bad spread throughout the US and allow it to affect Americans to the point where they can die. The whole process is just sickening and the government should really start taking action before americans start migrating somewhere else for a healthier life, hahah.

  5. I particularly appreciate the use of the word "streamlined" in the title of this program. When you streamline something, you make it more efficient, less wasteful -- so the word implies that health inspections are irrelevant to the basic process of food production.

But obviously cases like that of Lee Harding demonstrate that the money saved in this "streamlined" system produces other costs in terms of health and even life.

  6. MT: yes the better precautionary measure was taken and HACCP program was introduced. Well now every meat packing company hates the guy who made the HACCP program and often fight over it in federal court.
Constance: Thank you. I know it is just horrific!
Michelle: I understand your feelings. Calm down! :) Want YOUR WAY of rights? Fund the next government, the world is all yours....
Katherine: Nice thought. People... even though I dont eat that meat, I am so horrified by all that genetics used in grown crops, vegetables, and fruits that I am thinking to go and live somewhere else where atleast I know my food wouldnt be mutilated in such unhealthy ways...
Professor: That was what government loves to do. Even marketing business does it; mislead! Make up words and phrases that sound so genuine, healthy, and right, but turn out to be crap!
